Phylacteries and Fringes

Matthew 23:1-3;5-6;11-12

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach.
They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best
 seats in the synagogues,
The greatest among you will be your servant. All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted.

Phylacteries broad
and fringes long
The fashion of the day
for self respecting Pharisees
But fashion makes no difference
in caring for others
in showing compassion
in practising what is preached
Makes no difference
to humble service
We are called
not to look the part
but to play the part
In word and in deed
to show the love of Christ
who lived the love of God
Stooping to lift us up
Kneeling to wash our feet
Giving himself for us
Leading by example
Calling us to follow.
